Wildcard: Coach Ogoh Prepares D’Tigers for AFROCAN 2023

players of National male basketball Team who are Home-Based have since commenced intensive Preparations, at the National stadium, Surulere, Lagos, for the coming FIBA AfroCan 2023 tournament which comes up in Luanda, the Angola capital, from the 6th to the 16th of July, 2023, having being granted a wild card entry by FIBA. This is based on their performance at the just concluded qualifiers in Ivory Coast, and their established record of over the years.

The home-based team is currently in full swing with their preparations where they are honing their skills and strategies to do well at the tournament that promises to be very tough one, considering being in the group of death that has the host team Angola and Mali.
The training schedules are under the guidance of their esteemed coaching staff of Ogoh Odaudu and ably assisted by coaches Baba Jibril, and Abdulrahaman Mohammed. The team is focused on delivering a stellar performance in the tournament despite competing in the same group as the host country, Angola alongside Mali in the Fiba World Cup group stages.

This challenging lineup will provide an exciting opportunity for the Nigerian team to showcase their prowess against formidable opponents and hope to come out of the tournament stronger and with lots of experience.
The recent qualification stages held in Abidjan was made possible through the uncommon efforts of Engineer Musa Kida, the President of the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF), who despite personal challenging circumstances, rallied round to source for the funds to ensure Nigeria participated. His unwavering efforts have been instrumental in ensuring the team’s success thus far. Equally, the same can be said for Nigeria’s participation in the U-16 male and female teams that picked the sole tickets in both the male and female categories to represent zone 3 – West Africa at the African continental finals in Monastir, Tunisia.

As the teams continue to prepare, the NBBF will strive to fulfill its responsibilities while eagerly awaiting the release of funds from the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development to confirm participation.

The FIBA AfroCan 2023 tournament presents a platform for the home-based national teams to exhibit their talent to compete against other African national teams, and represent the nation with pride, as they face tested competition from various countries in Africa. The Nigerian team’s determination and skill will be on show as they are eager to demonstrate the depth of their basketball skills and make a lasting impression on the international stage.
