PRESS RELEASE: COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE BOARD MEETING OF THE NBBF

COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE BOARD MEETING OF THE NIGERIA BASKETBALL FEDERATION (NBBF) HELD ON MONDAY, 22 ND APRIL 2024, AT HOTEL DE BENTLEY , UTAKO, ABUJA, FCT.


The Board of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) held its regular Board Meeting at Hotel De Bentley, Utako, Abuja on Monday, the 22nd of April, 2024. The meeting was aimed at reviewing the activities of the Federation over the last year and to take far reaching decisions towards reorganizing the activities of the Federation as well as ensuring that the women’s national team (the D’Tigress) that qualified for the Paris 2024 summer Olympics get the desired support to prepare well for a good showing at the Olympics.
At the end of the meeting, the following key resolutions were reached:


1. That Board members should desist from being self-serving and regard themselves as equals among equals with the sole aim of selfless service to move Nigerian Basketball forward.

2. The Board approved the 2024 NBBF Calendar/Programme of Activities as presented and reviewed for implementation.

3. The Board also approved the updated financial position of the Federation for the year 2023, and as at the time of the meeting, being 22nd April, 2024, including what was presented and captured in the books of accounts of the Federal Ministry of Sports Development, for National team activities carried out, as approved by the Ministry for periods 2023 and up to 2024, as updated.

4. The Board also approved the reconstitution of the Federations standing committees, as presented, and modified, and also gave the go ahead for the various committees to be further populated with Nigeria Basketball Stakeholders who are willing to serve in the various committees that they are to serve in. The committees and their members will soon be made available to the public.

5. The Board also approved the Road Map for the preparations and effective participation of the Nigerian National Female Basketball Team at the 2024 Paris Olympics, as would be presented to the Federal Ministry of Sports Development for final approval and implementation.

6. The Board also acknowledged and ratified the presented list of athletes, coaches and officials that will be involved in the preparations and eventual participation of the National Women’s team at the Paris Olympic Games.

7. The Board approved the restructuring of the Nigerian men’s and women’s Basketball leagues, which will commence from the 2024/2025 Basketball League season, in line with best global practice. Despite the lack of sponsorship for the Men’s league as at time of presentation, the league shall be for a full season period as indicated in the 2024 activities schedule. The Board also approved the presented list of the 16 teams that will play in the 2024/25 Men’s league season as vetted and rectified by the Technical Committee of the NBBF.

8. The Board also directed the immediate operation of its website that will incorporate the NBBF leagues. The Board also approved the proposal for all clubs Participating in the NBBF Leagues to have a functional and traceable office address, websites, also develop other social media outlets that could easily be accessed by the public for information regarding their activities and functional contact telephone number(s).

9. .The Board expressed its sincere gratitude to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Honourable Minister for Sports Development, Sen. John Owan Enoh, for their huge support given to both the men’s and women’s National team which enabled the women qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, as well as win the Afrobasket for an unprecedented fourth consecutive time, while the Men’s team qualified to play in the next window qualifiers of the 2025 FIBA World Cup.
